What is ExplorersWeb?
ExplorersWeb is a daily news site on “exploration, adventures and journeys in all extreme environments”, founded by the climbers and polar travellers Tom and Tina Sjögren and owned since 30 June 2020 by AllGear Digital (then Lola Digital Media), the outdoor-media group behind GearJunkie. Its editor is Jerry Kobalenko.[1] [3]
What does it cover?
Mountaineering — the 8,000-metre seasons, alpine-style ascents, the Himalaya and Karakoram — plus polar expeditions, long-distance trekking, ocean rowing and expedition science, with several bylined pieces a day in season from a named team (Angela Benavides, Martin Walsh, Lou Bodenhemier, Rebecca McPhee).[1] [2]
What is its reach and standing?
No audience figure is published. Its standing is in what it does that nobody else does daily: independent, sourced reporting on expedition claims, permits, summits and deaths during the season, at a time when most expedition news arrives as operators’ press releases. The owner is a gear-and-affiliate media group; no federation or betting link.[1] [2] [3]
Since when?
Sources differ: AllGear’s acquisition note says “founded in 1999”; the site’s own About page implied about twenty years as of 2022. Late 1990s to 2002 is the honest range.[1] [3]
Why does it matter in mountaineering?
Because a Himalayan summit is a claim before it is a record, and ExplorersWeb is where such claims are examined in public. A season report here is the standard secondary source for who climbed what, and how.[1] [2]
