What is ERT Sports?

ERT Sports is the sport service of ΕΡΤ Α.Ε., Greece's public broadcaster, published at ertsports.gr, a domain separate from the parent's ert.gr. The parent's site links to ertsports.gr as its sport site and lists among its channels ΕΡΤ1, ΕΡΤ2 ΣΠΟΡ, ΕΡΤ3, ΕΡΤ NEWS and ERT Sports 1; its footer reads “© Copyright 2026 - ΕΡΤ Α.Ε.”[9]

ΕΡΤ's identity page states: “Η ΕΡΤ Α.Ε. είναι νομικό πρόσωπο ιδιωτικού δικαίου, που λειτουργεί με τη μορφή Ανώνυμης Εταιρείας, για την παροχή της δημόσιας ραδιοφωνικής, τηλεοπτικής, και διαδικτυακής υπηρεσίας. Εποπτεύεται από το Κράτος και έχει τις υποχρεώσεις μίας Δημόσιας εταιρείας.” The same page states that the company's mission and purpose are set by its founding law, Ν. 4173/2013, and records that Ν. 4972/2022 (Α' 181) provided for the companies it covers to draw up a mission statement with the consent of the finance minister and the supervising minister.[2] Those are the company's statements about itself.

Article 1(1) of Law 4173/2013, in its original text, reads: “Συνιστάται νομικό πρόσωπο ιδιωτικού δικαίου με τη μορφή ανώνυμης εταιρείας για την ελληνική δημόσια ραδιοφωνία και τηλεόραση, καθώς και τη διαδικτυακή (ίντερνετ) δραστηριότητά τους, που έχει έδρα την Αθήνα.” Article 1(2) gave the company the name «ΝΕΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΡΑΔΙΟΦΩΝΙΑ, ΙΝΤΕΡΝΕΤ ΚΑΙ ΤΗΛΕΟΡΑΣΗ Α.Ε.», abbreviated ΝΕΡΙΤ-Α.Ε.[3] Article 1 of Law 4324/2015, ΦΕΚ Α' 44/29.4.2015, gave the company the name «ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΡΑΔΙΟΦΩΝΙΑ ΤΗΛΕΟΡΑΣΗ ΑΝΩΝΥΜΗ ΕΤΑΙΡΕΙΑ (Ε.Ρ.Τ. Α.Ε.)».[4] The company's own pages cite Law 4173/2013 as its founding law.[2]

What does ERT Sports cover?

On 24 September 2026 the ertsports.gr home page carried EuroLeague basketball items on Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, domestic and international football, and volleyball, where it reported letters of congratulation to the national teams, and athletics.[1]

The same page published the ΕΡΤ2 ΣΠΟΡ schedule. For 24 September 2026 it listed a men's handball Premier match between Doukas and Aris Nikeas at 11:00 and a Superbet League 2 football match between Anagennisi Karditsas and Panionios at 17:00; for the following days it listed further Superbet League 2 football matches and women's volleyball, including an international women's tournament on 29 September.[1]

Article 1 of Law 4324/2015 provides: “Η Ε.Ρ.Τ. Α.Ε.

How large is ERT Sports's audience?

Television audiences in Greece are published under the name Nielsen Audience Measurement. Its weekly channel shares, for the whole population aged four and over and the day from 02:00 to 25:59, give ΕΡΤ 2 ΣΠΟΡ 2.2 per cent for 31 August to 6 September 2026 and 1.8 per cent for 7 to 13 September 2026. The same table gives ΕΡΤ 1 3.7 and 4.2 per cent in those weeks. Each is one week's reading.[5]

For single sport broadcasts, Nielsen's list of the top 20 programmes for 13 to 19 July 2026 gives its first twelve places to 2026 World Cup broadcasts and programmes on ΕΡΤ 1 and ΕΡΤ2ΣΠΟΡ. The first, the second half of Spain–Argentina on ΕΡΤ 1 on 19 July 2026, had 2,309,000 viewers, a 22.9 per cent rating and a 67.9 per cent share. The highest entry on ΕΡΤ2ΣΠΟΡ, the second half of France–England on 18 July 2026, had 613,000 viewers and a 39.4 per cent share.[6] Those are single broadcasts, not averages.

Since when has ERT Sports existed?

The company that operates the service was established by Law 4173/2013, published in ΦΕΚ Α' 169 of 26 July 2013, under the name ΝΕΡΙΤ-Α.Ε.[3] ΕΡΤ's identity page refers to that law as its founding law.[2]

No launch date for ertsports.gr or for the channel ΕΡΤ2 ΣΠΟΡ could be retrieved from ΕΡΤ's own pages, and none is given here.

Why does ERT Sports matter in Greece's sport?

ΕΡΤ 1 and ΕΡΤ2ΣΠΟΡ broadcast 2026 World Cup matches, and Nielsen's top-20 list for 13 to 19 July 2026 is made up in its first twelve places of ΕΡΤ's World Cup broadcasts and programmes.[6] Its sport channel also carries domestic competitions below the top football division, including handball, Superbet League 2 football and women's volleyball.[1]

Two monitoring bodies have published on the public broadcaster's independence. Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 index entry for Greece, states: “The government spokesperson is responsible for overseeing the public media, which endangers their editorial independence.”[7] The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom's Media Pluralism Monitor 2026 states: “Public Service Media (ERT) faces very high risks to independence, with longstanding political influence over its editorial line and governance structures, including politically driven appointments and dismissals of senior management.”[8] Those are the bodies' characterisations.

The same monitor scores Greece at 67 per cent risk for market plurality and 62 per cent for political independence.[8]
