What is El Vocero?

El Vocero de Puerto Rico is a Spanish-language daily newspaper and news site. Its own account of itself gives the ownership: “Desde 2013, cuando EL VOCERO y sus activos pasaron a manos de Publi-Inversiones Puerto Rico, Inc.”[1] The same account states that before then the title “operó bajo una estructura diferente, al ser parte de un fondo de inversiones extranjero”, and that in 2013 “un grupo de empresarios de Puerto Rico asumió la responsabilidad de mantener con vida la publicación EL VOCERO cuando adquirió los derechos del nombre de esta publicación”.[1] Those are the newspaper's statements about itself and they are reported as such.

The site carries the slogan “La verdad no tiene precio” and maintains a staff directory of its editorial team, which is published under the heading Conócenos and names the journalists with their backgrounds.[2][3] The directory carries no history of the publication and no circulation statement; those sit on a separate history page.[3][1]

What does El Vocero cover?

The sports front is divided into Baloncesto, Béisbol, Boxeo, Voleibol, Fútbol, NFL, Tenis, Hipismo, a section on Puerto Ricans in professional wrestling, a section for the Liga Atlética Interuniversitaria and Otros deportes.[4] The university league has a standing heading of its own, which not every general daily gives it.

The section front retrieved on 23 September 2026 carried the women's basketball league, the 2026 draft of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente set for 28 September, player movement in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional, and North American professional sport.[4]

It also covers the Olympic committee. On 14 February 2023 it reported the Comité Olímpico de Puerto Rico's seventy-fifth anniversary in the Olympic movement, dated the International Olympic Committee's admission of Puerto Rico to 14 February 1948 — a date the committee's own account instead gives as 14 January 1948 — and quoted the committee's president Sara Rosario Vélez saying “Llevamos 75 años de grandeza deportiva en lo más alto del mundo olímpico”.[5]

How large is El Vocero's audience?

The newspaper names an audited currency and gives figures against it. Its history page states “más de 155 mil copias impresas auditadas por el Certified Audit of Circulation (CAC)” and “sobre 108,000 suscriptores digitales”.[1]

Both are the newspaper's own statements; neither figure carries a period, and the history page that prints them is itself dated 1 December 2013, so this page reports them as the title's claims rather than as current measured figures. The audit body is named — the Certified Audit of Circulation — but no CAC report for the title could be retrieved, so the claim rests on a single source, the newspaper itself.[1]

Since when has El Vocero existed?

The newspaper dates itself: “EL VOCERO, originalmente, fue fundado en 1974 y operó bajo una estructura diferente, al ser parte de un fondo de inversiones extranjero”.[1] It gives a second date for the present publication — 1 December 2013, when it states the title was relaunched with a new editorial philosophy and design after the 2013 change of ownership.[1]

Founding, acquisition and relaunch are three different dates and the page keeps them apart: founded 1974, acquired by Publi-Inversiones Puerto Rico, Inc. in 2013, relaunched 1 December 2013.[1] All three come from the newspaper's own history page; EnciclopediaPR, the reference work published by Humanidades Puerto Rico, separately dates the paper to “El Vocero en abril de 1974”.[6] The site separately carries a line marking “75 años construyendo a Puerto Rico”, which does not reconcile with a 1974 founding; both appear on the title's own pages and this page carries both without choosing.[2]

Why does El Vocero matter in Puerto Rico's sport?

Because it carries the institutional sports calendar alongside the professional one. A standing section for the Liga Atlética Interuniversitaria puts university competition — the body that has run Puerto Rican university sport since 1929 — in the same navigation as the professional leagues.[4]

Its Olympic reporting is also where a datable discrepancy in the record surfaces. Its 2023 anniversary piece gives the International Olympic Committee's admission of Puerto Rico as 14 February 1948, a month later than the date on the committee's own account, and quotes the committee's president directly.[5] For a reader checking when a recognition took effect, the existence of two published dates is itself the finding.

The title is also one of the few on this list that names an audit body for its own circulation, which is what allows its claims to be checked at all rather than only repeated.[1]
