What is El Universal Deportes?
El Universal Deportes is the sports desk of El Universal, a Mexico City daily. The newspaper's own history page states that it was founded on 1 October 1916 on the initiative of the engineer Félix Fulgencio Palavicini, then a member of the Constituent Congress at Querétaro, with its first newsroom and workshops at the corner of Madero and Motolinía in the centre of the capital.[1]
The sports desk publishes as Universal Deportes on the newspaper's site and in the printed paper, rather than as a separate title.[3] [2] Because the section sits on a path of the parent site, the registrable domain recorded here is the newspaper's own, eluniversal.com.mx, and not a separate address for the sports desk.[3]
What does El Universal Deportes cover?
The desk covers the national sporting calendar rather than a single sport. Its published file runs Liga MX and the Mexican national team, international club football, boxing, tennis — including the WTA tournament staged in Guadalajara — motor racing and Olympic-programme sport.[3] [2]
The section sits inside a general daily, so sport is published alongside national politics, economics, culture and the states, and shares the paper's regional editions for the State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Puebla, Hidalgo, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí.[2]
The group also publishes sport through two other outlets listed as verticals on the same site: the tabloid El Gráfico, which publishes at elgrafico.mx and whose evening predecessor El Universal Gráfico first appeared on 1 February 1922, and De10sports.[3] [1] The same file feeds the printed edition.[2]
What are El Universal Deportes' reach and standing?
The paper's documented claim to national standing is a circulation one. Its own history page states that from 1990 El Universal certified its paid circulation and in doing so became the first newspaper in Mexico to take that step; the same page records that it adopted the masthead line "El Gran Diario de México" in January 1921.[1] Both are the newspaper's statements about itself.
Its site lists apps, regional editions and a subscription service.[2] The newspaper has published on the internet since 1 April 1996, initially updating the site overnight with each edition of the paper.[1]
No current audited figure for the sports section specifically could be retrieved: the desk is a section of a general newspaper rather than a separate title, so its audience is measured, where it is measured at all, as part of the parent.[3]
Since when has El Universal published?
The newspaper dates itself to 1 October 1916 and sets out a sequence of separate dates on its own history page. Palavicini left the management and editorship on 14 April 1923; Miguel Lanz Duret took over as manager and José Gómez Ugarte as editor, and on Lanz Duret's death in 1940 the presidency passed to his son.[1]
From 23 October 1969 Juan Francisco Ealy Ortiz assumed the presidency and general management of the group, a period the paper associates with its circulation certification from 1990 and with the redesign of 1999.[1]
Founding, format and platform are three different dates. The paper was founded in 1916, launched the evening El Universal Gráfico on 1 February 1922, and went online on 1 April 1996.[1] The sports desk runs within that history; no separate founding date for the section itself could be retrieved, and the section is published today as Universal Deportes.[2] [3]
Why does El Universal Deportes matter in Mexico's sport?
Mexican sports coverage is concentrated in outlets owned by the two free-to-air broadcasters and in the two national sports mastheads. A general daily's sports desk sits outside both. El Universal's record is documented from 1916: founded on 1 October of that year, certifying its paid circulation from 1990, and online since 1996.[1]
That matters for sports the specialist titles treat seasonally. The desk carries boxing in a country the World Boxing Association credited in September 2023 with about 170 world champions, more than any other country in Latin America and second worldwide behind the United States, and it carries Olympic-programme sport between Games rather than only during them.[4] [3]
It also connects sport to the rest of the national file — the regulation, financing and governance stories that reach sport through the paper's news desks rather than its sports pages.[2]
