What is El Nuevo Día?
El Nuevo Día is a Spanish-language daily newspaper and news site published from San Juan. Its own sports front carries the copyright line “©2026 GFR Media”, which identifies the publisher, and the title is one of the two newspaper brands named on the publisher's corporate site alongside Primera Hora.[1][2]
GFR Media describes itself on that site as “Una empresa del Grupo Ferré Rangel”, a company with business lines in media, real estate, customer engagement, social innovation and investment.[2] That is the publisher's own account of its ownership and it is reported here as such. The corporate site's own copyright line, as retrieved, reads “Derechos reservados, GFR Media © 2023”, so the corporate pages are not maintained on the same cycle as the newspaper.[2]
What does El Nuevo Día cover?
The newspaper's sports front is divided into Béisbol, Baloncesto, Boxeo, Voleibol, Tenis, Fútbol, Otros deportes and a standing section for the 2026 football World Cup.[1] The division follows the sports that have professional leagues and national federations on the island rather than the international sports calendar alone.
Three retrieved pieces show the range. On 8 September 2026 the paper reported the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente's announcement that its 2026-27 season would start on 4 November 2026 and run its regular season to 28 December, with six clubs — Cangrejeros de Santurce, Leones de Ponce, Senadores de San Juan, Criollos de Caguas, Indios de Mayagüez and Gigantes de Carolina — and quoted the league president Juan A. Flores Galarza giving the previous season's gate as “cerca de 381,000 fanáticos en nuestros estadios”.[3] On 7 July 2026 it reported that the Baloncesto Superior Nacional would wait for its official season attendance figures before deciding whether to change the competition format.[4] On 19 September 2020 it reported that the Organización Deportiva Centroamericana y del Caribe had approved a change of name to Centro Caribe Sports at an extraordinary general assembly.[5]
Those three are league announcements, league business and a governing-body decision — the categories that a reference reader comes to a daily for. The paper also maintains a standing section for the 2026 football World Cup alongside the domestic headings, so the national-team calendar sits in the same navigation as the winter baseball and summer basketball seasons.[1]
How large is El Nuevo Día's audience?
No audited figure for this title on its own could be retrieved. What the publisher publishes is a group figure: GFR Media states that it connects brands with “una audiencia de 2M de adultos en Puerto Rico y más de 10M de usuarios en nuestras plataformas digitales”.[2] That statement covers the company's brands together, not this newspaper separately, and it is the company's own claim.
An audited currency does exist and the publisher names it. GFR Media states that “Nuestros datos de circulación impresa y digital, son auditados por Alliance for Audited Media”, and dates the data behind the statement to July 2023.[2] The audited numbers themselves were not displayed on the page retrieved, which showed the figure placeholders as zero, so this page reports the existence of the audit and its date and no circulation number.[2]
Since when has El Nuevo Día existed?
Two sources give two different years and this page adopts neither. GFR Media's own corporate timeline places “Nace El Nuevo Día bajo el mando de Antonio Luis Ferré” at 1979.[6] EnciclopediaPR, the reference work published by Humanidades Puerto Rico, states that “El Nuevo Día comenzó a publicarse en San Juan en mayo de 1970”.[7] The publisher's corporate home page states no founding year for the title, and the newspaper's own sports front carries only the copyright line “©2026 GFR Media”.[2][1]
What can be dated is the publishing record itself. The paper's retrieved reporting runs from 19 September 2020 through 7 July 2026 to 8 September 2026, which establishes publication across that period and current coverage of the domestic leagues.[5][4][3]
Founded, acquired and renamed are three different dates; the two accounts above differ on the first and neither page gives the other two. The publisher's corporate site is itself out of date on its own face: the copyright line it served reads 2023 while the newspaper's pages read 2026.[2][1]
Why does El Nuevo Día matter in Puerto Rico's sport?
It is where several of the dated statements the governing bodies make first appear in full. The Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente's 2026-27 calendar, its six-club field and its president's attendance figure were carried there on 8 September 2026.[3] The Baloncesto Superior Nacional's position on its own attendance data and on the format of its competition was carried there on 7 July 2026.[4]
It also carries regional governance. The name change of the body that organises the Central American and Caribbean Games — a competition Puerto Rico has hosted — was reported there with the date of the assembly that approved it.[5] For a reader tracing when a decision was taken and by which body, that is the use of the title on this list.
