What is El Heraldo?
El Heraldo is a general daily newspaper published in Tegucigalpa. Its own page states that “su razón social es Publicaciones y Noticias S.A. (PUBLYNSA.)”.[2] The site's footer, as retrieved on 26 September 2026, carries the name Grupo OPSA with links to El Heraldo, La Prensa, Diez, Revista Estilo, Buen Provecho and Revista E&N.[1] These statements are the outlet's own; no register of media ownership in Honduras was retrieved.
La Prensa, a title of the same group, described El Heraldo in 2010 as one of the group's daily titles, founded fifteen years after La Prensa, in 1979.[4] The group's president is named on La Prensa's own page as Jorge Canahuati Larach.[5]
Its sports coverage is on a path of the parent site, elheraldo.hn/deportes, not on a separate domain. The copyright line reads “El Heraldo - Todos los derechos reservados ©”.[1]
What does El Heraldo cover?
As retrieved on 26 September 2026, the sports path led with the Honduran national team after its Concacaf Nations League match against Suriname, under headlines including “Datos: el rendimiento de Honduras vs Surinam en la Nations League 2026” and items quoting players and the team's staff. It also carried international football, among them a match of Cape Verde against Mali. Its menu offered photo galleries and videos for sport, and items dated 24 and 25 September 2026 were visible.[1]
The domestic league is the Liga Hondubet, which lists twelve clubs for the Apertura 2026-2027, among them Olimpia, Motagua, Lobos UPNFM, Olancho, Juticalpa and Estrella Roja in its central group.[3]
Olympic and other sports. The paper keeps a topic archive on Honduran athletes. As retrieved on 26 September 2026 it listed, among its most recent items, “Comité Olímpico Hondureño establece alianza con marca italiana” (17 March 2026), “Conocé a los atletas cinco estrellas que sacan la cara por Honduras” (10 March 2026), “Estos son los hondureños que competirán en los Juegos Olímpicos París 2024” (15 July 2024), “Más delegados que atletas: la delegación de Honduras en París 2024” (24 July 2024) and an item of 1 December 2023 headed “Ana Kafie, la atleta hondureña que logró récord de buceo en Egipto”.[7]
El Heraldo's own page does not break down its coverage by section, so no figure for its sport output is given here.[2]
How large is El Heraldo's audience?
No television-audience currency, audited readership survey or web audit covering Honduran outlets was found, and the broadcasting market study posted by the competition authority, the Comisión para la Defensa y Promoción de la Competencia (CDPC), could not be retrieved. No audited figure for El Heraldo was found.
El Heraldo's own page, read on 26 September 2026, gives no audience or circulation figure.[2] The group's 2010 account described it as “el periódico de mayor influencia en Tegucigalpa y mayor circulación”; that is the group's account of its own title, sixteen years old, with no measuring body named.[4]
La Prensa, a sister title, publishes its own digital audience claims, of more than 4 million unique users a month; those figures are for La Prensa, not El Heraldo, and are not applied here.[5]
Since when has El Heraldo existed?
El Heraldo's own page states: “El diario fue fundado el 26 de noviembre de 1979 por el Licenciado Jorge J Larach”.[2]
La Prensa's 2010 account of the group agrees on the year: “Quince años después, en 1979, fue fundado diario El Heraldo con sus oficinas en Tegucigalpa”.[4] Both accounts come from the same group, and the founding date is the outlet's own.
Why does El Heraldo matter in Honduras's sport?
Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index, places Honduras 132nd of 180 and writes: “The country's leading papers are La Prensa, El Heraldo and La Tribuna.” Its media-landscape entry opens: “Media pluralism has been undermined by multinational corporations taking over major outlets and political and business leaders acquiring local newsrooms.”[6] Those are the monitor's statements, and it names no owner of El Heraldo.
El Heraldo is a Tegucigalpa general daily with sport as one section, published within the group that also publishes the sports daily Diez and La Prensa, and it was publishing national-team coverage on 26 September 2026.[1]
Its site publishes the group's principles for the use of artificial intelligence, headed “Principios de aplicación de IA Grupo OPSA”. Under human supervision they state: “Todo proceso editorial debe empezar por un humano y terminar en un humano.” They add that final responsibility for any material generated with the support of AI “recaerá siempre en un editor, periodista o responsable humano”.[8]
