What is El Caribe?

El Caribe is a Santo Domingo daily published online at elcaribe.com.do, where the title styles itself Periódico elCaribe.[1]

The group around it is documented from outside it. Diario Libre reported on 25 February 2025, in an item about the programme La Hora del Deporte moving to CDN canal 37, that CDN is “el canal matriz de Multimedios El Caribe”.[2] CDN Deportes' own tag for Multimedios del Caribe returned a report dated 15 May 2024 on a special programme with presidential candidates run by Multimedios El Caribe.[3] Both are other outlets' statements, anchored to those dates and attributed here rather than adopted; no later statement of the group's composition was retrieved.

Parts of the title's own site did not serve when retrieved on 23 September 2026: its institutional page at /quienes-somos/ and its section index at /seccion/deportes/ each returned HTTP 403, while individual article pages served normally.[1][4]

On the market it publishes in, Reporters Without Borders writes of the Dominican Republic that “However, the concentration of media ownership in the hands of a few private groups, such as Grupo Corripio, has raised concerns regarding pluralism and editorial independence.”, and places the country 44th of 180 in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index with a score of 69.73.[6]

What does El Caribe cover?

Sport sits on a Deportes path of the title's own domain rather than on a separate site, which is where its volleyball reporting is published.[4]

That reporting records completed continental results. Of the 2023 NORCECA continental final the paper wrote that “Las Reinas del Caribe, selección femenina nacional de voleibol de República Dominicana, se coronan este domingo campeonas del Torneo Continental NORCECA al vencer a Estados Unidos, por 3 sets a 2”, at Quebec in Canada.[4]

Sport also reaches the paper outside the sports desk. Its Panorama section carried a report that a bill submitted in the Chamber of Deputies by the deputy Carlos Higinio de Jesús Veras would establish la vitilla as the national sport and would recommend that UNESCO “incluir este juego como patrimonio de la humanidad”, and that the bill “aún no ha sido tomada en consideración”.[5]

The home page that did serve carried service content rather than a news index when retrieved — fuel prices and a horoscope strand — so the breadth of the daily file could not be read from it.[1]

How large is El Caribe's audience?

No audited circulation figure and no audited audience currency for the Dominican market could be retrieved for this page, and no readership number was retrieved from any page of the title that served.[1][4] Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and none is quoted here.

The page on which an outlet ordinarily states such things is the institutional one, and that page returned HTTP 403 when retrieved, so nothing it may publish about the title's reach is reported here.[1]

What can be stated is that its article pages served and carried dated material: the volleyball report and the Panorama report on the vitilla bill were both retrieved on 23 September 2026.[4][5]

Since when has El Caribe existed?

No founding date for the title was retrieved. The page on which an outlet usually states one, /quienes-somos/, returned HTTP 403, and no statute, gazette or regulator record establishing a date for the title was retrieved either.[1]

What is dated is the group around it, and a group date is not a founding date for a title. Diario Libre's statement that CDN is the parent channel of Multimedios El Caribe is anchored to 25 February 2025, and CDN Deportes' tagged report on a Multimedios El Caribe programme is dated 15 May 2024; each is a floor for the group's activity rather than a statement about when this title began.[2][3]

The earliest dated item of the title's own that was retrieved is the Panorama report on the vitilla bill, which the same report places after the bill's submission on 16 January 2023; that too is a floor rather than a starting point.[5]

Why does El Caribe matter in Dominican Republic's sport?

Its documented sporting output is dated competition reporting on its own domain: the report of the Dominican women's volleyball team taking the NORCECA continental title against the United States is published on its Deportes path.[4]

It carries sport-adjacent material outside that desk as well, which is where the vitilla bill was reported — a proposal to declare a street game the national sport, reported as a bill and, on the report's own wording, one not yet taken into consideration.[5]

It sits inside a television group on the statements of two other outlets: Diario Libre in February 2025 and CDN Deportes' own tag page in May 2024 both name Multimedios El Caribe, so the title's sports material sits beside broadcast output rather than standing on its own.[2][3]

Reporters Without Borders' statement about concentration of media ownership among a few private groups is quoted above and is RSF's characterisation of the Dominican market, not this page's.[6]
