What is Echorouk Online?

Echorouk Online is an Arabic-language news site titled “الشروق أونلاين.. عينك على الجزائر والعالم”, Echorouk Online, your eye on Algeria and the world.[1]

Its site-management section names Ali Fodil as “المدير الشرفي لمجمع الشروق”, honorary director of the Echorouk group, and Rachid Fodil as “المدير العام لمجمع الشروق”, its director general.[1] No page setting out the group's shareholders, its print titles or its legal form was retrieved.

A television channel under the same name, Echorouk TV, is named by Reporters Without Borders and by the 2016 IMMAR survey below. The corporate relationship between the channel and the site was not established from a source retrieved.[3][4]

What does Echorouk Online cover?

The site publishes sport under the path echoroukonline.com/sport, titled “رياضة – الشروق أونلاين”.[2]

As retrieved on 27 September 2026, the ten most recent items there were all dated 26 September 2026, and most concerned football. They included “المنتخب الوطني يحقق انطلاقة قوية في تصفيات "الكان"”, on the national team's strong start in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and “مدرب زامبيا يعلّق بعد الهزيمة أمام "الخضر"”, on the Zambian coach's comments after the defeat by Algeria.[2]

The same list carried a round-up of the second round of the domestic second division, “حصاد الجولة الثانية لِبطولة القسم الثاني”, an item on players' summer transfer choices, an item on a youth national team's win, and a commentary headlined “"الخضر" ضيعوا سنتين من العمر الكروي مع بيتكوفيتش”, on the national team under its former coach.[2]

The home page carried the national-team items among its general news on 26 September 2026.[1]

How large is Echorouk Online's audience?

No audited traffic figure for echoroukonline.com and no audited television-audience currency for Algeria were found. That is a limitation of the evidence.

The only measured reading retrieved concerns the channel Echorouk TV, not the site, and covers one week in 2016. DIA reported on 4 July 2016, from a survey by the institute IMMAR in the first week of Ramadan: “En milieu urbain c'est Ennahar TV qui arrive en première position (33,7%), suivie d'Echourouk TV (29,6%), MBC-1 (13,7%) et TV3 (13%).” It added: “En milieu rural, Echourouk TV arrive en tête (29%), suivie d'Ennahar TV (28,3%), TV3 (16,5%) et Nessma Hamra (8,2%).”[4]

Algerie360, reporting the same survey, gives its sample as “2.480 individus (51 % hommes et 49% femmes) âgés de plus de 15 ans”.[6] These are one week's Ramadan readings from ten years ago, and not figures for sport or for the website.

Since when has Echorouk Online existed?

No founding date for Echorouk Online, for the Echorouk group or for any print title of the group was established from a source retrieved, and the site's own pages that were read give none.[1]

What can be dated is its presence: RSF's current Algeria page names Echorouk TV, the channel of the same name, and DIA's report of 4 July 2016 names it in the IMMAR survey of that year.[3][4] The site was publishing sports items on 26 September 2026.[2]

Why does Echorouk Online matter in Algeria's sport?

It is a national news site with a sports section that, in September 2026, reported the national team's qualifying campaign and the domestic second division.[2]

The monitor. Reporters Without Borders, which ranks Algeria 145th of 180 in its 2026 index, states on its Algeria page: “Privately owned TV channels, including Ennahar TV, Echorouk TV and El Bilad TV, are the leading media.” It also states: “The independent media are under pressure, journalists are often jailed and prosecuted, and several websites are blocked.” On the economy of the sector it states: “The private sector has been hit hard since 2019, with many media outlets, including TV channels, forced to shut down, above all because advertising has dried up.”[3] Those are the monitor's words.

The media law. Loi organique n° 23-14 of 27 August 2023 relative à l'information, published in the Journal Officiel n° 56 of 29 August 2023, provides in article 4 that information activities are carried on by media belonging to “des institutions publiques et les entreprises et organismes du secteur public”, to political parties, associations and trade-union organisations within the limits set by the laws governing them, and to Algerian natural persons or legal persons whose capital or shareholders are, in the article's word, “exclusivement” Algerian. Article 12 provides that any outlet receiving funding or material aid “doit être lié organiquement à l'organisme donateur”, and its second paragraph reads: “Le financement et/ou l'aide matérielle directe et indirecte de toute partie étrangère sont interdits, sous peine des sanctions pénales prévues par la loi.”[5]
