What is Extra?

Extra is a daily newspaper published in Guayaquil. The copyright notice on its own pages names Gráficos Nacionales S.A. as the company holding its rights, the same company named on the pages of Expreso.[1][2] Expreso, reporting the death of the publisher's founder, records that “el 21 de octubre de 1974 nació EXTRA, que se convirtió en el diario de mayor circulación en Ecuador”.[3] That is a statement by a title of the same publisher about a title of the same publisher, and it is reported as such.

Its pages carry a standing Deportes section, which is where all three of the items retrieved for this entry sit.[1][2][4] The publisher is the same one Expreso names in its own account of itself, where Gráficos Nacionales S.A. is given as the owner of that title.[5] Two of the six outlets on this list are therefore published by one company, and that is stated rather than left to inference; no monitoring body's published assessment of ownership concentration in the Ecuadorian press could be retrieved for this page.

Its football coverage runs on the LigaPro Serie A calendar, and the figures below come from the league's own records as the newspaper describes them.[4]

What does Extra cover?

Its sport reporting is club-level and numerical. On 26 December 2025, on records it attributes to LigaPro, it gave the completed 2025 season club by club: Liga de Quito averaging “12.211 espectadores” over 20 home matches, roughly 232,000 in all; Emelec 8,786 at home across 20 home matches, about 167,000; Barcelona SC close to 8,000 across its away matches; and, at the other end, Delfín at 523 home spectators a match and Universidad Católica at 951.[4] Those are gate figures for a completed season, and the number of home matches is stated.

On 14 August 2026 it published the five-year LigaPro series, “La LigaPro registra un promedio de 3.668 espectadores por partido durante el último quinquenio”, with 3,261, 3,606, 4,086 and 3,604 for 2022 to 2025 and 3,787 for 2026 through matchday 23, attributed to “el organizador del campeonato ecuatoriano”.[1] On 10 September 2025 it published a head-to-head of the Clásico del Astillero: “Barcelona tiene 76 victorias, Emelec 72, y han empatado en 88 ocasiones” in 237 national championship matches, and “106 triunfos para Barcelona, 92 para Emelec y 103 empates en 301 partidos”.[2]

How large is Extra's audience?

No audited circulation or audience figure for Extra could be retrieved for this page. The only circulation statement available is the one quoted above, published by Expreso under the same ownership, that Extra “se convirtió en el diario de mayor circulación en Ecuador”; it carries no number, no date and no auditing body, so it cannot function as a measurement and is reported only as that newspaper's wording.[3]

Extra's own pages carry no circulation figure, no subscriber count and no audience statement.[1][2] No audited press-measurement currency for Ecuador could be retrieved against which to test any such claim.

Since when has Extra existed?

The date used here is 21 October 1974, and it comes from Expreso's report of 3 December 2025 on the founder of both titles.[3] Extra's own pages retrieved for this entry state no founding year, and the copyright line they carry reads only “©2026”.[1][2]

Because the source is a title of the same publisher, the date rests on the owner's account rather than on an independent record, and no gazette entry or incorporation document could be retrieved to corroborate it. The distinction between the date a newspaper was founded and the date its publishing company was incorporated is not drawn by that source.[3]

Why does Extra matter in Ecuador's sport?

Its 2025 attendance reporting gives what the league does not publish as a table: home-match averages for individual clubs with the number of home matches stated, from Liga de Quito at 12,211 down to Delfín at 523.[4] Those figures differ from another outlet's reading of the same season — Liga de Quito at 12,211 here against 12,009 elsewhere — and the two are reported separately rather than reconciled.

Its Clásico del Astillero count is also its own and is scoped: 237 meetings in the national championship, and 301 across all competitions.[2] Reading both counts alongside Expreso's shows how far a South American derby's head-to-head depends on which competitions are included, which is why this list carries more than one publisher's version. Both titles belong to Gráficos Nacionales S.A.[1][3]
