What is Diario El Mundo?

Diario El Mundo is a daily newspaper published in El Salvador. Its own history page identifies the group behind it as Grupo Mundo Multimedia and states that the group “cuenta con más de 150 empleados” and also publishes regional titles including El Migueleño and El Santaneco.[2]

Its site is on the subdomain diario.elmundo.sv, whose footer menu runs from Política, Economía and Nacionales to Deportes, Escena, Salud and Kiosko Digital, and whose footer lists Vidasana and Fundación Borja as related entities.[3] Sport is published on the path diario.elmundo.sv/deportes.[1]

Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 entry for El Salvador, names El Mundo among the country's traditional outlets: “There is a combination of traditional outlets, mostly print (El Diario de Hoy, La Prensa Gráfica, El Mundo)”.[4] No company filing or ownership register was retrieved; the group name given here is the paper's own.

What does Diario El Mundo cover?

On 26 September 2026 its Deportes section was publishing through the day. Its items that day, with the times it printed, included a report at 1:19 p.m. on two national-team players injured after the match against Martinique; a report at 6:11 a.m. that Guatemala had lost 3–2 to Jamaica in the Concacaf Nations League; and items on the French and Spanish national teams. Its match report on El Salvador's win over Martinique was published at 10:54 p.m. on 25 September.[1]

The national team. That report, under Ariel Olivares's name, opens: “La Selecta se impuso 3-1 ante Martinica en el estadio Jorge El Mágico González, en el inicio de la Liga A de Naciones de la Concacaf 2026.” It names the scorers, two goals for one forward and one for another, and Martinique's goal from a penalty in the 50th minute.[6]

The domestic league. Its preview of the twelfth round, published on 26 September 2026 under Ariel Olivares's name, opens: “El Club Deportivo Luis Ángel Firpo se medirá este sábado ante el Club Deportivo Águila en el marco de la jornada 12 de la Liga GanaPlay Apertura 2026”. It lists the weekend's fixtures with their broadcasters, giving “Transmisión: / Canal 4” for the Firpo–Águila and Isidro Metapán–Cacahuatique matches and “Transmisión: FOX” for another.[5] That is one of the few places where the league's sponsor name, GanaPlay, was found in the retrieved record.

The section front on 26 September 2026 also carried tennis and baseball items, on a player's withdrawal from the Beijing tournament and on Major League Baseball jersey sales. The sample is a day's front of the section, not a statement about everything it covers.[1]

How large is Diario El Mundo's audience?

No audited circulation, readership or web-traffic figure for Diario El Mundo was retrieved, and no press audience-measurement body for El Salvador was found. That is a limit of the evidence.

The paper's own history gives a measure of the organisation rather than of its audience: it states that Grupo Mundo Multimedia “cuenta con más de 150 empleados”, and that the group publishes El Migueleño and El Santaneco as well as El Mundo.[2] That is the paper's own statement. The same page gives an undated social-media count of its own: “Casi 900 mil usuarios de Facebook, más de 400 mil en Twitter y casi 50 mil en Instagram”. No date or measuring body is given for it, and it is not adopted here.[2]

The only external measure of standing retrieved is Reporters Without Borders' listing of El Mundo among the traditional print outlets in its 2026 entry.[4]

Since when has Diario El Mundo existed?

The paper's history states that Diario El Mundo was founded by Dr. Juan José Borja Nathan in November 1966 and first circulated as an evening paper on 6 February 1967.[2] Those are two different dates, a founding and a first issue, and both are the paper's own.

The same page states that “el día 2 de junio de 2004 EL MUNDO se convirtió en un periódico matutino”, a morning paper.[2] It records the group's purchase of Heidelberg printing presses, one of them a four-colour press, and states that its titles include “periódico El Migueleño y El Santaneco, revistas como la Vidasana y DeVacaciones”.[2] No independent source for any of these dates was retrieved.

Why does Diario El Mundo matter in El Salvador's sport?

It is one of three newspapers that Reporters Without Borders names as El Salvador's traditional, mostly print, outlets in its 2026 entry, which ranks El Salvador 143rd of 180 countries with a score of 38.88.[4]

On 26 September 2026 it was publishing sport through the day, and its round preview of that date is a dated record of the domestic league's sponsor name, the Liga GanaPlay Apertura 2026, and of the broadcasters carrying that weekend's matches, Canal 4 and FOX.[1][5]
