What is Denník Šport?

Denník Šport is a Slovak newspaper devoted to sport, published together with a website at denniksport.sk. Its contacts page gives the publisher as ŠPORT PRESS, s.r.o., of Francisciho 4, 811 08 Bratislava, with IČO 31 330 789, registered at the Mestský súd Bratislava III in section Sro under entry 3349/B, and names Peter Vavro as director.[1] The same page gives Vladimír Pančík as deputy editor-in-chief for print and football and Miloslav Šebela as deputy editor-in-chief for the online edition, and Milan Hanzel as head of the hockey desk.[1]

The site's own description of the title is “jediný športový denník na Slovensku” — the only sports daily in Slovakia.[2] That is the outlet's characterisation of itself and is reported here as such.

The publisher has a documented stake in the wider Slovak sports-media market beyond the newspaper. Ringier announced on 11 January 2024 that Ringier Slovakia Media s.r.o. had acquired the remaining one-third minority stake in the Šport.sk portal from Šport Press, becoming the portal's sole owner.[3]

What does Denník Šport cover?

The editorial page sets out the shape of the newsroom: a football department of nine journalists, a hockey department of four reporters, a three-strong department for the other sports, and four web editors.[4] Marián Ragula is given as head of the sports department and Igor Gressner and Miloslav Šebela as deputy editors-in-chief.[4]

Domestic football is the largest single subject. On 13 June 2025 the paper published the completed-season attendance figures for the Niké liga, giving 499,593 spectators for 2024/25 at an average of 2,536 a match against 508,384 and 2,620 the season before, and per-club averages headed by ŠK Slovan Bratislava at 7,359, FC Spartak Trnava at 4,602 and FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda at 4,370.[5]

Ice hockey has its own desk and its own head of department, which is the division the masthead itself draws.[4] Beyond those two, the third desk covers the individual sports in which Slovakia holds most of its Olympic record — canoe slalom, biathlon and shooting among them.[4]

How large is Denník Šport's audience?

No audited circulation or readership figure for Denník Šport could be retrieved for this page. Neither the outlet's contacts page nor its editorial page publishes a circulation statement alongside its imprint.[1][4]

For online reach, the recognised measurement in Slovakia is the joint industry research run through IAB Slovakia. Its annual report for 2025 gives an internet population aged 12 and over of 3.7 million, 3.1 million monthly visitors to the sites included in the research, and coverage of 34 digital publishers across 73 domains.[6] IAB Slovakia states that from 1 April 2026 the research is operated by Gemius Slovakia as gemiusAudience, the successor to IABmonitor, with the public data published through the Gemius portal.[7] No per-domain figure for denniksport.sk appears in the annual report retrieved for this page, and no figure from the current research could be retrieved.

Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and no figure from one is given here.

Since when has Denník Šport existed?

The outlet's own site gives no founding date for the newspaper. Neither the contacts page nor the editorial page carries a year of first publication, an ISSN or a registration number for the periodical, and no independently published founding date could be retrieved for this page.[1][4]

What is dated is the corporate history. ŠPORT PRESS, s.r.o. is registered at the Mestský súd Bratislava III under entry 3349/B in section Sro, and the copyright line on the site's own pages runs in the publisher's name.[1][2] The publisher's holding in the Šport.sk portal ended on the date Ringier announced the buy-out, 11 January 2024.[3]

Why does Denník Šport matter in Slovakia's sport?

The paper is one of the bodies that publishes the season-total attendance figures on which any structural account of Slovak spectator sport rests; its 2024/25 Niké liga numbers, published on 13 June 2025, are the completed-season count for that season.[5]

Its position also sits inside a concentrated market. The Euromedia Ownership Monitor's Slovakia report for 2025, written by Ivan Godársky and Marek Mračka of MEMO 98 and coordinated at the University of Salzburg, describes a “clear dual structure” in which a small number of diversified domestic groups control major outlets while holding extensive non-media business interests, which it says creates “structural risks of instrumentalisation and conflicts of interest”.[8] The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom's Media Pluralism Monitor 2026 puts Slovakia's market plurality risk at 69 per cent and states that “Slovakia faces high levels of media ownership concentration, with the top four owners controlling over 60% of the audience in the newspaper, TV, and radio sectors”.[9]

Neither monitoring body's finding is specific to this title; both are quoted here as published statements about the market it publishes in.
