What is CR Hoy?
CR Hoy is a Costa Rican news site at crhoy.com.
Its own “Nosotros” page states: “Nuestra misión es informar a Costa Rica de forma inmediata, veraz, y gratuita.” The same page describes it as “el medio digital #1 de Costa Rica”; that is the outlet's own claim.[3] The site's footer reads “© 2026 CR Hoy - Todos los derechos reservados”.[1]
Ownership. The ownership and media-group headings on Mediapolis's entry for CR Hoy carry no content, and CR Hoy's own “Nosotros” page names no company or shareholder.[2][3] No register entry was retrieved.
Its sports news sits on the path crhoy.com/deportes of the parent site.[1]
What does CR Hoy cover?
As retrieved on 26 September 2026, the sports section carried items dated 25 and 26 September on the federation's decision to keep the national coach, on Central American teams' results against Caribbean opponents, on the disciplinary round-up of the ninth round of the first division, in which it named Herediano as the club sanctioned most, and an agency report on France's national team. Most items carried a staff byline; the France item was credited to AFP.[1]
Integrity reporting. It reported that the commission had notified the final resolution of file 001-2023.[8]
The first division is the Liga Promerica, and the national team plays in Concacaf competition; both were the subject of that week's items.[1]
How large is CR Hoy's audience?
No audited traffic figure for crhoy.com was retrieved.
Web estimate. La Nación reported on 31 July 2026, from Similarweb data presented at the Data Media Day Costa Rica 2026 organised by the Cámara de la Comunicación Comercial (Camco), that CR Hoy had 7.09 million monthly visits, behind nacion.com's 8.32 million, and 1.36 million monthly unique users. The article does not state which month the figures cover.[4] Similarweb is a traffic estimator, not audited measurement, and the ranking was reported by a competing outlet.
An older figure. CR Hoy reported on 10 February 2020 that a technical report of Sutel's quality directorate “coloca al sitio CRHoy.com como el tercero más visitado en Costa Rica”, after Google and YouTube; the same article states that Sutel had used figures from Alexa.com.[5] That is the outlet's own account of a figure more than six years old, and the Sutel report itself was not retrieved.
Since when has CR Hoy existed?
Mediapolis gives 2012 as the founding year and states: “De acuerdo con una entrevista publicada por el LatAm Journalism Review (LJR), el medio comenzó a planificarse en 2011 por iniciativa del empresario Leonel Baruch, quien impulsó la creación de un sitio informativo completamente digital en un contexto en el que los medios tradicionales aún no priorizaban sus plataformas web.”[2] That account is Mediapolis's, resting on the interview it names.
The interview Mediapolis cites is LatAm Journalism Review's article of 12 May 2021 by Marina Estarque, which states: “CRHoy comenzó a planificarse en octubre de 2011, cuando un banquero, Leonel Baruch, se acercó a ella.” It states that “El lanzamiento estaba programado para enero de 2012”, and does not state the day the site went live.[7] CR Hoy's own article of 10 February 2020 describes it as “La página de noticias que nació en el 2012”.[5] The sources agree on the year.
Business model. The same LatAm Journalism Review article states, as of May 2021: “Hasta el día de hoy, los únicos ingresos de CRHoy provienen de la publicidad, porque todo el contenido es gratuito y está abierto a los lectores.” It quotes the outlet listing its subjects: “nosotros publicamos contenido de economía, política, espectáculos, deportes, tecnología”.[7] CR Hoy's own “Nosotros” page now also names a membership programme, CR Hoy Pro.[3]
Why does CR Hoy matter in Costa Rica's sport?
CR Hoy is among the news sites whose Similarweb monthly-visit figures La Nación reported in July 2026, and its sports section published same-day national-team and league coverage in the week of the build date.[4][1]
Reporters Without Borders, in its 2026 country entry, describes the landscape as including “privately owned commercial outlets, public media outlets, cultural and religious TV channels and academic outlets”, and states that “The concentration of media ownership in the hands of a few conglomerates has limited media pluralism.” It names no outlet in those passages.[6]
