What is Чемпіон?

Чемпіон is a Ukrainian sports news site published at champion.com.ua, with an associated radio service carried under the same name. Its own pages are organised by sport and by competition and carry match reports, results, interviews and transfer news, together with a Telegram channel it promotes on the site.[1]

The site itself publishes no statement of its corporate publisher, its register identifier or its funding on the pages read for this page, so what follows on ownership rests on reporting rather than on the outlet's own disclosure.[1]

Its ownership has a dated anchor rather than a standing description. Forbes Ukraine reported on 28 February 2024 that the sports site had returned to the Українська правда media group — "До медіагрупи «Українська правда» повернувся спортивний сайт «Чемпіон»" — and that a redesign, a migration to new technical infrastructure and an expansion of the editorial team were planned.[2] That is the position as reported on that date.

What does Чемпіон cover?

Football dominates the published output. The site's front page carries Ukrainian Premier League and European club football alongside national-team coverage, and it also runs standing coverage of boxing, tennis, futsal, basketball and biathlon, with a general sports section for everything else.[1]

It also produces audio. Under an agreement announced by the Ukrainian Premier League, Чемпіон Радіо became the official radio broadcaster of the Ukrainian championship for the 2025/26 season, carrying selected matches from each round with live commentary; the league described the arrangement as complementary to, rather than a replacement for, the video coverage on its own UPL.TV.[3]

That places the outlet inside the league's media arrangements rather than only alongside them. The league moved from club-by-club sales to a collective model two seasons before July 2026, when it said it intended to sell exclusive rights from the winter of 2027 at an opening price of 10 million US dollars a season.[4]

How large is Чемпіон's audience?

No audited audience or readership figure for Чемпіон could be retrieved for this page, and none is given here.

Ukraine has no published audited circulation currency for online sports titles, and the television currency is a Nielsen panel whose limitations are documented: a trade report of 9 September 2026 records that the panel then in use covered only settlements of 50,000 inhabitants and above, and that the market was openly discussing who should conduct a replacement measurement and how it should be funded, participants citing cost, technology and what one of them called the realities of electricity supply and of population displacement.[5]

Commercial traffic estimators are not audited measurement, and no figure from one is presented here as though it were. Nor is the outlet's radio arrangement a proxy for audience: the league's announcement records which matches Чемпіон Радіо carried in 2025/26 but publishes no listening figure.[3]

Since when has Чемпіон existed?

Forbes Ukraine gives the launch precisely: "Сайт «Чемпіон» запустив засновник «Української правди» Георгій Гонгадзе у вересні 2000 року" — the site was launched by the founder of Українська правда, Heorhiy Gongadze, in September 2000.[2]

The same report records that the site operated independently of that media group for years before the February 2024 change, so the launch date and the current group affiliation are separate facts with separate dates.[2] The radio service is later and its own start date could not be retrieved; what is dated is the league agreement under which it carried the 2025/26 championship.[3]

Why does Чемпіон matter in Ukraine's sport?

Its position rests on a contracted role rather than on a claim. For the 2025/26 season the Ukrainian Premier League named Чемпіон Радіо the official radio broadcaster of the Ukrainian championship, and set out the accessibility ground the league gave for the arrangement, including following matches without a screen and access for listeners with visual impairments.[3] That is the league's own stated reasoning, reported as such.

It is also one of the Ukrainian outlets whose sports reporting has continued through the period in which national television news was reorganised by decree into a single marathon under martial law.[6] When the site was read for this page it was carrying current football and general sports items, but no date or timestamp was printed against them on the pages read, so continuity of publication could not be dated from the site itself.[1]

Its third function is one of affiliation: through the February 2024 change it sits inside a general-news media group rather than standing alone as a single-sport title.[2] The wider question of how sport is sold and carried is set out at broadcast rights.
