What is CBC Sport?

CBC Sport is a sports television channel publishing at cbcsport.az. Its own site describes it as “Azərbaycanın HD yayıma çıxan ilk telekanalı” — the first television channel in Azerbaijan to broadcast in high definition — and states that it “Azərbaycan və dünya idmanının nəbzini tutur, sağlam həyat tərzini təbliğ edir”, that it follows the pulse of Azerbaijani and world sport and promotes a healthy way of life.[1] Those are the channel's characterisations of itself.

Its own presentation page, dated 1 August 2025, names Volkan Üst as the channel's baş direktor, its chief executive, and no other ownership statement could be retrieved from the channel's own pages.[2] Azerbaijani media entities are recorded in the Media Reyestri, the electronic register established under article 73.1 of the Law on Media and operated by the Media Agentliyi.[3]

Reporters Without Borders ranks Azerbaijan 171st of 180 in its 2026 World Press Freedom Index with a score of 23.95, and its media-landscape text for the country opens: “Virtually the entire media sector is under official control, and state-owned television is the most popular information source.” That sentence is quoted as published; RSF does not name this channel in it.[4]

What does CBC Sport cover?

The channel's own presentation page of 1 August 2025 lists what it carries: the Azerbaijani football championship, the country cup and the First and Second divisions — “Futbol üzrə Azərbaycan çempionatı, ölkə kuboku, Birinci və İkinci liqa” — and “müxtəlif yaş qruplarından ibarət yığmalarımızın oyunları”, the matches of the national teams across age groups; Italy's Serie A and the Dutch Eredivisie; the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League; tennis tournaments and the Brilyant Liqa in athletics, the Diamond League; the 3×3 basketball world series; and cycling, swimming and marathon events.[2] Its site's own section navigation runs wider still, with pages for basketball, volleyball, judo, wrestling, boxing, chess, athletics, badminton, gymnastics, hockey, handball, weightlifting and winter sports.[1]

Each of those is the channel's own listing rather than a rights document, and no term or expiry date for any of the arrangements was retrieved. One carriage arrangement is separately dated: on 11 June 2026 both İdman və Biz and APA Sport reported that twelve of the 104 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be shown live on CBC Sport, the other 92 on İctimai Televiziya.[5][6]

How large is CBC Sport's audience?

No audited television audience measurement for CBC Sport could be retrieved for this page, and no recognised Azerbaijani measurement currency publishing ratings for it was found. Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and no estimate from one is given here.

What is documented instead is carriage. The channel's own list of competitions is set out above, from its presentation page of 1 August 2025.[2] For a single dated event, twelve of the 104 matches of the 2026 World Cup were reported as going to CBC Sport on 11 June 2026.[5][6]

The only third-party statement about the reach of Azerbaijani television retrieved here is RSF's sentence that “state-owned television is the most popular information source”, which is quoted as published and is not a figure for this channel.[4]

Since when has CBC Sport existed?

The channel states that it began broadcasting on 1 November 2015, on a page of its own site dated 1 August 2025.[2] That is the channel's claim about itself and no independent source carrying the same date was retrieved for this page.

The self-description attached to the same date — “Azərbaycanın HD yayıma çıxan ilk telekanalı”, the first channel in Azerbaijan to broadcast in high definition — is likewise the channel's own and is quoted rather than adopted.[1][2] The register in which Azerbaijani media entities are now recorded was established later, under article 73.1 of the Law on Media.[3]

Why does CBC Sport matter in Azerbaijan's sport?

Its significance on this list is carriage of the domestic game. The channel's own listing puts the Azerbaijani championship, the country cup and the First and Second divisions, together with the national teams across age groups, on its schedule, alongside two foreign leagues and the UEFA club competitions.[2] Where attendance figures measure who attends, a broadcast schedule measures what is made available, and both are reported here as proxies rather than as popularity claims.

The second is that it shared the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the public broadcaster on a documented split: twelve matches on CBC Sport, 92 on İctimai Televiziya, as reported on 11 June 2026.[5][6] That is anchored to that tournament and carries no stated term beyond it. Where a rights position is stated only in an outlet's own listing, as most of this channel's are, the listing is reported as the channel's own and no term, value or counterparty is inferred from it.[2]
