What is Akhbar El-Yom?

Akhbar El-Yom (أخبار اليوم) is a Cairo press house. Its digital portal at akhbarelyom.com presents itself as "بوابة أخبار اليوم", the Akhbar El-Yom portal, and describes itself as a digital journalism portal.[1]

The house is therefore both a print publisher and a digital title, and the two are not the same thing: the portal aggregates the house's newspapers and magazines under one domain rather than replacing them.[1]

The portal names its board chair and editor-in-chief but carries no ownership statement.[1] Media Ownership Monitor Egypt's print section lists the house's daily title, Al-Akhbar, among the Egyptian newspapers it records as state-owned, alongside Al-Ahram and Al-Gomhuria.[2] That classification is the monitoring project's finding about the daily, not a statement the house makes about itself.

What does Akhbar El-Yom cover?

The portal lists the titles of the house: the weekly أخبار اليوم, the daily جريدة الأخبار, the magazine آخر ساعة, and separate titles for crime news, celebrity news and literature.[1]

Sport on the portal runs as a section headed أخبار الرياضة, Akhbar El-Riyada, with sub-sections for Al Ahly and Zamalek alongside sports news, interviews and reports. The portal carries it as a section of the site rather than as a separate masthead, and no separate sports newspaper of the house could be confirmed.[1] Media Ownership Monitor Egypt's print database, which profiles ten Egyptian print outlets, lists no sports newspaper among them; its Al-Ahram Establishment profile, by contrast, names Al Ahram Al Ryadi as one of that house's publications.[2][3]

No statement by the house describing the scope of the sports title's coverage could be retrieved, and no single edition is offered here as evidence of standing coverage. Dated competition outcomes remain citable from the governing bodies, such as CAF's record of Zamalek's five continental titles, the last in 2002.[4]

How large is Akhbar El-Yom's audience?

No audited circulation or readership figure for the house or for any of its titles could be retrieved. The Media Ownership Monitor Egypt print section, which profiles Al-Akhbar, gives no circulation or readership figure for it or for any of the ten print outlets it covers.[2]

The only figures that section offers are category-level survey estimates: Egyptian newspaper readership falling from 25 per cent in 2013 to 24 per cent in 2015 and to 16 per cent in 2017, on a Northwestern University survey.[2] That describes the reading population and not this publisher.

Traffic estimators are not audited measurement and no estimator figure is given here. No Egyptian measurement currency producing audited, outlet-level circulation figures could be retrieved, which is a limitation of the available evidence rather than of any one publisher.[2]

Since when has Akhbar El-Yom existed?

No founding date for the press house could be confirmed from a primary source. The portal itself states that it represents one of Egypt's oldest and most widely circulated newspaper publishers, which is the house's description of itself and carries no date.[1]

The only date retrievable from the portal is a domain creation date of 10 November 2000, which is the date the outlet's own website domain was registered and is not the founding date of the publishing house or of any of its titles.[1] Founding, incorporation and the registration of a domain are three different dates.

Nor could a date be established for the sports section أخبار الرياضة separately from the house that publishes the portal; the portal carries the section without a date.[1]

Why does Akhbar El-Yom matter in Egypt's sport?

It is a Cairo press house whose portal carries a standing sports section, أخبار الرياضة, with its own sub-sections for Al Ahly and Zamalek, which places daily sports journalism inside a general publishing group.[1]

Its status matters to how its sports pages are read: Media Ownership Monitor Egypt records the house's daily as state-owned, which places its reporting on public sports bodies inside the same sector as those bodies.[2] See sport in Egypt.

The administrative decisions a sports title of this kind reports are the ones that shape the Egyptian season: the per-match spectator limit for Egyptian Premier League fixtures was raised from 10,000 to 20,000 with effect from the thirteenth matchday of 2023–24, on the announcement of the president of the Egyptian Premier League, Ahmed Diab, reported on 18 February 2024.[5]

Because no founding date and no audited circulation figure could be retrieved for the house or its sports section, its entry rests on what the portal publishes about its own titles and on the monitoring project's classification of the daily, each recorded with its own source.[1][2]
