What is AGN?
The Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias (AGN) is the news agency of the Secretaría de Comunicación Social de la Presidencia (SCSP). Its own page states that it “surgió en el año 2010 como un canal informativo clave”, cites Acuerdo Gubernativo 465-98 as its legal basis, and states that it works under the SCSP's mandate to “formular y ejecutar la política de comunicación del Gobierno de la República.”[3] The acuerdo itself was not retrieved.
The same page describes the agency as providing official information on government action and on other subjects, among them sport. The site's footer credits its development to the SCSPR.[3][1] Its sports coverage is published in a category of the parent site, agn.gt/category/deportes.[2]
What does AGN cover?
National team. As retrieved on 26 September 2026, the sports category led with items dated 24 and 25 September 2026 on Guatemala's Concacaf Nations League matches, including a report of the defeat to Jamaica and the group standings, alongside general news on the home page.[2][1] On 25 September it reported that the match against El Salvador is scheduled for 28 September 2026 at the Estadio El Trébol, and that it could be followed on FOX Deportes, “que cuenta con los derechos de transmisión de la Liga de Naciones en Centroamérica”.[7] That match had not been played on 26 September 2026.
School and university sport. AGN reported on 12 May 2025 that the Ministry of Education's Dirección General de Educación Física (Digef) had opened the Juegos Deportivos Escolares Nacionales 2025, with more than 8,000 student athletes, running from 4 May to 7 November 2025.[5] On 1 October 2023 it reported that the ministry and Digef had reached about 500,000 children that year, through phases it listed as “municipal, departamental, regional, nacional e internacional”.[8] On 25 September 2026 it published a picture report on the Juegos Deportivos Universitarios Nacionales 2026 in Guatemala City, naming the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, Universidad Mariano Gálvez, Universidad Da Vinci and Universidad Panamericana among the competitors in futsal and basketball.[6] On 24 September it published a running medal table for those games, whose first row read “Universidad del Valle – 6 oros / 3 platas / 3 bronces / 12 totales”, and a points ranking in which, it stated, “el primer lugar recibe 10 ptos”. That was a count during the games, not a final table.[9]
History. On 28 February 2024 it published an account of the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games in Guatemala City, held “entre el 28 de febrero y el 12 de marzo de 1950”, and stated: “Con la participación de mil 390 atletas, distribuidos en 14 países, en 19 deportes”. It named the venues as the Estadio Nacional Olímpico de la Revolución, the Gimnasio Nacional, the Palacio de los Deportes, the Piscina Olímpica and the Teatro al Aire Libre.[4]
How large is AGN's audience?
No audience figure for AGN was retrieved, whether from an audit, a survey or the agency itself. Its own page describes its aim as reaching the population “de forma clara, oportuna y precisa”, and gives no reach figure.[3]
Its output can be dated. As retrieved on 26 September 2026, its home page led with items dated 25 September 2026, several of them on the national football team and the Nations League.[1] The sports category listed further items dated 24 and 25 September 2026, among them two on the medal table and the progress of the 2026 national university games.[2]
Since when has AGN existed?
AGN's own page gives 2010 as the year it emerged, and Acuerdo Gubernativo 465-98 as its legal basis.[3] The text of the acuerdo was not retrieved, so what it provides is not stated here.
The site's footer reads “AGN.GT - 2021”.[1] No independent record of the agency's start was retrieved.
Why does AGN matter in Guatemala's sport?
AGN is the government's own news agency, and it reports on state sports programmes. Its reports give participant figures for Digef's national school games, cover the 2026 national university games, and give the dates and participant figures of the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games.[5][6][4] Those figures are the agency's.
It also reports where Guatemalan viewers can follow the national team; on 25 September 2026 it named FOX Deportes as the holder of the Nations League rights in Central America.[7] Its statements about government action are those of the government's communication office, and are attributed as such.[3]
