What are the World Triathlon Multisport Championships?
The World Triathlon Multisport Championships gather several of World Triathlon's world championships at one host in one festival. For 2026 the federation lists "duathlon, cross duathlon, long-distance triathlon, long-distance aquabike, aquathlon, and cross triathlon world championship races in a week-long festival."[1] World Triathlon defines duathlon as "A continuous run–bike–run race — two runs with a longer bike leg in between, and no swim."[13] Aquabike is "A swim–bike discipline (no run) contested over long distances at the World Triathlon Multisport Championships."[14]
Who organizes the Multisport Championships?
The championships are organised and awarded by World Triathlon, whose Executive Board awarded the 2026 edition: "The World Triathlon Executive Board has decided to award the 2026 World Triathlon Multisport Championships to Abu Dhabi, UAE".[1] The same announcement names the earlier hosts: Penticton, Fyn, Pontevedra, the split 2021 and 2022 editions, Ibiza in 2023 and Townsville in 2024.[1]
When and where are they held?
The festival is annual and has no fixed month or host; recent editions have run from late April to November. The 2026 edition is on Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi, from 13 to 22 November 2026, with the duathlon championships on 14 and 15 November and the long-distance triathlon and aquabike on 22 November; it has not yet taken place on 27 September 2026.[2] World Triathlon records that "After the pandemic impacted the 2020 event, in 2021 the championships were divided across three different locations", and that the 2022 edition was "also split between two locations".[1] The 2021 festival had been planned for Almere, the Netherlands, in September; World Triathlon reported that it was "unable to proceed as planned due to local Covid travel restrictions", that only the long-distance championships went ahead there, on 12 September 2021, and that the duathlon championships moved to Aviles, Spain, where they were held on 6 November 2021, with cross triathlon and aquathlon at El Anillo, Spain, in late October.[12]

Season, the world championships contested, and host with dates, from World Triathlon's event pages and news releases.[6][7] No edition was held in 2020. The 2018 Fyn dates are from World Triathlon's Fyn event page.[4] The 2021 dates are from World Triathlon's review of that year; the Ibiza 2023 event page header gives 5–7 May, while its race programme ran from 29 April.
Since when do they exist?
World Triathlon states that the Multisport Championships "made its debut in the World Triathlon calendar in 2017 in Penticton, Canada, followed by Fyn, Denmark in 2018, and Pontevedra, Spain in 2019."[1] The individual world titles are older than the festival: World Triathlon dates the first duathlon world championships to 1990 in Cathedral City, USA, and states that "Since 2017 duathlon's world titles have been decided at the annual World Triathlon Multisport Championships."[13] It also records that "The Long Distance World Championships began on 26 June 1994 in Nice, France".[14]
How do athletes qualify?
Entries go through national federations. For age-group athletes World Triathlon states: "Each National Federation runs the qualification process for its athletes and selects the qualifying races (where applicable) for the different World Championships."[11] It adds: "You cannot enter directly — each Age-Group athlete registers through their National Federation."[11] The event pages show the same route for all categories; for the 2022 Samorin races, registration was handled through national federations by 22 July 2022.[8] See qualification standards.
Why do they matter?
The measurable proxies are the number of world titles decided at one event and the size of the field. The 2025 Pontevedra edition awarded world titles in duathlon, cross triathlon, cross duathlon, aquathlon, long-distance triathlon and long-distance aquabike.[3] World Triathlon's Townsville event page records "3,000 athletes for the Multisport party" in 2024.[5] For Penticton 2017 it reported "over 3,000 athletes from all over the world"[10], and its announcement of the Abu Dhabi award states that "Over 3,000 athletes from all over the world will enjoy another festival of the sport with friends and family".[1]
Who competes?
The festival mixes elite and age-group racing. The 2019 Pontevedra programme listed elite, U23, junior and age-group duathlon races alongside para and mixed relay events.[9] The 2024 Townsville championships included para, relay and age-group divisions across the disciplines.[5] The 2026 programme lists sprint, standard and mixed relay duathlon, para events, standard cross triathlon, cross duathlon and aquathlon, and long-distance triathlon and aquabike.[2] The field is entered by World Triathlon's member national federations.[11]
