What are the World Indoor Championships?

The World Athletics Indoor Championships are the world championships of indoor track and field — the 200-meter-track winter game's global title event, held every two years. The 21st edition took place in Toruń, Poland, 20–22 March 2026.[1][2]

Who organizes them and how do athletes qualify?

World Athletics owns the championships; entry follows the standard dual pathway — indoor entry standards or World Rankings position — with athletes selected and entered by their national federations.[1][3]

Since when do they exist?

The first World Indoor Championships were held in Indianapolis in 1987, following the 1985 World Indoor Games in Paris; they have run biennially since, in even years.[2]

The 2020 Nanjing edition was postponed repeatedly by the pandemic and finally held in March 2025.[2]

Why do they matter?

World Indoor titles are full world championships — global medals in the sport's winter season — and the meet's compressed 200 m track produces some of athletics' fastest and most tactical racing.[1][2]
