What is the Continental Tour?
The World Athletics Continental Tour is the sport's global circuit of one-day meetings below the Diamond League: more than 280 meetings across all continental areas in 2026, graded into four levels — Gold, Silver, Bronze and Challenger — by competition quality and prize money, with 11 Gold meetings at the top.[1] [2]
How does the label system work?
Each label carries defined requirements and a fixed World Rankings points scale — the higher the label, the more ranking points a placing earns. The labels make every result exactly comparable: a win at a Gold meeting is a quantified, published credential, and Continental Tour points are a primary route into World Championships and Olympic fields via the rankings pathway.[2] [3]
Since when does it exist?
Launched in 2020 as part of World Athletics' restructuring of the global calendar, and expanded every season since — 2026 is its biggest-ever season.[1]
Why does it matter?
For the great majority of world-class athletes — those outside the Diamond League's invitation lists — the Continental Tour is where world ranking positions are built and championship qualification earned. Its label system turns "how good was that meet?" into an objective, documentable answer.[2] [3]
