What are the World Karate Championships?

Karate's world titles, staged by the World Karate Federation since the first edition in Tokyo in 1970. Twenty-six editions were held in the traditional combined format through Budapest 2023, contesting kata and kumite weight categories for men and women together.[1] [2]

Recent editions. From 2024 the championship splits into two alternating events.

The 2024 split into two events

From 2024 the WKF divided the senior world championship in two. The World Senior Individual Championships, in odd years, run a global qualification phase culminating in a qualification tournament, then a final phase of exactly 32 athletes per category seeded into round-robin pools, with the top two per pool advancing to a knockout. The Karate World Cup, in even years, is national-teams only — male and female team kata and team kumite, 80 teams in all, 20 per category.[1] [3]

How do athletes qualify?

Through the ranking pathway, not by national nomination alone. Individual competitors earn their places on the Karate1 Premier League and Series A circuit and at the final qualification tournament in order to reach the 32-athlete final phase; teams qualify for the World Cup through a ranking process capped at twenty per category.[1] [3]

Who wins — and where does karate stand?

Japan leads the all-time senior standings with 98 golds and 214 medals, ahead of France on 58 and Spain on 24; Egypt and Türkiye have become the strongest challengers of recent cycles. On Olympic status the site is deliberately plain: karate appeared at Tokyo 2020 only, was not on the Paris 2024 programme, and has not been selected for LA28 or Brisbane 2032. It remains a World Games sport and returns at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.[2] [4]
