What is the Liga BetPlay?

The Categoría Primera A — sold as Liga BetPlay DIMAYOR after its betting sponsor — is the top division of Colombian men’s football. It is organised by the División Mayor del Fútbol Colombiano, the body of the professional clubs founded in 1948, under the Federación Colombiana de Fútbol.^[1] [10]

How does it work?

Twenty clubs play two tournaments a year, each opening with a 19-round todos-contra-todos first phase. The I-2026 tournament used straight playoffs; the II-2026, which began on 24 July, returned to the traditional cuadrangulares semifinales — two groups of four over six matchdays — and a two-leg final. Each tournament champion takes a Copa Libertadores group-stage place; the remaining Libertadores and Sudamericana places go by the reclasificación, the annual table. Two clubs are relegated to the Primera B each year by promedio, points divided by matches over the first phases of recent seasons. From 2026 clubs may register four foreign players and field all four together, with squads cut to 25.^{[1] [6] [7]}

Since when does it exist?

Professional football in Colombia dates from DIMAYOR’s first championship in 1948. Junior’s consecutive titles in the II-2025 and I-2026 tournaments were the Barranquilla club’s eleventh and twelfth; Atlético Nacional’s II-2024 title was their 18th. Atlético Bucaramanga (I-2024) and Deportivo Pereira (II-2022) won their first titles in the last five years.^{[2] [3] [4] [5] [10]}

Why does it matter?

Atlético Nacional is the country’s highest-ranked club, 30th, on CONMEBOL’s 2026 club ranking. The FA’s Governing Body Endorsement criteria place the Colombian Primera A in Band 4, the same band as La Liga 2, 2. Bundesliga and Ligue 2.^{[5] [8] [9]}
