What are the IHF World Handball Championships?
Handball's world titles, staged by the International Handball Federation in odd-numbered years — the men's championship in January, the women's in November and December. Both have run on a 32-team format since 2021: eight preliminary groups of four, a main round of four groups of six carrying head-to-head points forward, then quarter-finals and the medal matches, with a President's Cup deciding places 25 to 32.[1] [2]

How do teams qualify?
Through the continental championships, plus automatic places for the hosts and the reigning world champions and a small number of IHF wild cards. For the 2027 men's championship the slots run 16 to Europe (including hosts Germany), 5 to Africa, 4 to Asia, 4 to South and Central America, 1 to North America and the Caribbean, and 2 IHF Council wild cards; Europe's are decided by placings at the EHF EURO plus a three-phase qualification ending in play-offs.[1] [3]
Who has dominated?
Denmark's men are the story of the era: their 32–26 win over Croatia in Bærum in 2025 made them the first side to win four consecutive world championships, with Mathias Gidsel named MVP after ten goals in the final. On the all-time list France lead with six men's titles ahead of Denmark, Sweden and Romania on four. In the women's game Norway won again in 2025, beating Germany 23–20 in Rotterdam, and hold five titles — the most of any current nation.[2] [4]
Why does it matter?
Because handball has no larger stage outside the Olympic Games, and the world championship is the wider one — 32 nations against the Olympic tournament's twelve. It also feeds Olympic qualification directly, and its all-star team and MVP awards are among the sport's most-cited individual honours.[1] [3]
