What is the IBJJF World Championship?

The Mundials — the World Championship of gi jiu-jitsu, first held in Rio in 1996 and staged in California since 2007. The 30th edition, at Long Beach's Walter Pyramid in May 2026, crowned Tainan Dalpra, Gabi Pessanha and Mayssa Bastos among its black-belt champions, with the legendary Diego "Pato" Oliveira retiring on top.[1][2]

How does it work?

Four days of brackets across every belt, weight and the open class — thousands of competitors, with the black-belt finals the sport's championship Sunday. Titles at each belt are true world championships, which makes the Mundials ladder a documented career arc from blue belt to the elite.[2][3]

Why does it matter?

A black-belt world title is BJJ's defining achievement — the roll of Mundials champions from Roger Gracia's era to Dalpra's is the sport's history — and even colored-belt golds carry recognized weight throughout the grappling world.[1][2]
