What are the FEI World Championships?

The FEI World Championships are equestrian sport's world titles — the biggest event in the sport outside the Olympics, held every four years at the Olympic cycle's midpoint. The 2026 edition unites six disciplines — jumping, dressage, eventing, driving, vaulting and para dressage — in Aachen, Germany, 11–23 August.[1][2]

Who organizes them and how do athletes qualify?

The FEI owns the championships; nations qualify team quotas through rankings and continental events, and national federations select their squads — individual and team world titles are decided in each discipline, with Aachen 2026 doubling as an LA28 Olympic qualifier.[2][3]

Since when do they exist?

Discipline world championships date to the 1950s and 1960s; from 1990 through 2018 they were united as the World Equestrian Games, and since 2022 (Herning) the FEI World Championships format has continued the tradition — Aachen 2026 is its grandest edition, at the sport's most famous venue.[1][2]

World Championship medals stand beside Olympic medals at the top of the sport, and championship team selection is the definitive national-team credential in each discipline.[1][3]
