What is the WBC?

The World Boxing Council (WBC) is the most widely recognized of boxing's four sanctioning bodies — founded in Mexico City on 14 February 1963 by representatives of eleven countries, and today claiming affiliates in over 160 nations. Its green-and-gold belt is the most famous prize in the sport.[1][2]

What titles does the WBC sanction?

WBC world championships in 18 divisions — the traditional 17 plus bridgerweight, which it created in 2020 — with monthly ratings, mandatory challenges and its signature Franchise and interim designations. Ali, Leonard, Chávez, Mayweather, Canelo: the green belt's lineage is boxing's who's-who.[1][2]

Since when and where?

Founded 1963, headquartered in Mexico City. The WBC led major safety reforms — most consequentially the reduction of championship fights from 15 rounds to 12 after the death of Duk-koo Kim in 1982.[1][2]

Who leads the WBC?

Mauricio Sulaimán has been president since 2014, succeeding his father José Sulaimán, who led the organization from 1975 to 2014.[3][4]

Why does the WBC matter?

The WBC title is, by common consent, the most prestigious single belt in boxing, and WBC rankings — published monthly — are the sport's most cited measure of contender status.[1][2]
