What is NCAA Division III?

Division III is the NCAA's largest division — more than 420 colleges and universities and over 170,000 student-athletes, roughly 40% of all NCAA athletes — built on the principle that athletics is part of the educational experience rather than a scholarship enterprise.[1][2]

How does Division III differ?

D-III schools award no athletic scholarships — though about 80% of their athletes receive merit- or need-based aid — and play shorter seasons with regional focus. Many academically elite institutions compete in D-III.[1][2]

What championships does Division III hold?

Division III runs full national championships in each sponsored sport — including its own Swimming & Diving Championships — and its top athletes earn All-America honors and, in individual sports, occasionally reach national-team level.[3][4]
