What is the FIA?
The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile is the governing body of world motorsport — founded in Paris in 1904, seated in Paris and Geneva, and uniting 240+ motoring and sporting organizations from more than 140 countries.[1]
What does the FIA govern?
The International Sporting Code and safety standards; the world championships — Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship, the World Rally Championship, Formula E and karting; the F2/F3/F4 junior pyramid; and the licence system, from national grades to the Super Licence, administered through each country's sporting authority.[1] [2]
Who leads it?
President Mohammed Ben Sulayem of the UAE, elected in 2021 and re-elected in December 2025 — the federation's dual mandate covering both world championship sport and everyday mobility for its member clubs.[1] [3]
Why does the FIA matter?
Every licence, race result, championship point and stewards' decision in FIA-sanctioned motorsport is its official record — the paper trail of a racing career from karting licence to world title.[1] [2]
