What are the World Junior Swimming Championships?

The World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships are the world championships of junior swimming — the global title event for swimmers aged 14 to 18, raced on the full Olympic-program event schedule in a 50 m pool.[1][2]

Who organizes them?

World Aquatics owns and organizes the championships; world junior records are ratified by the federation, and results seed the sport's global junior rankings.[1]

When and where are they held?

Every two years, in odd-numbered years, in a rotating host city — most recently Otopeni, Romania, 19–24 August 2025.[1][3]

Eligibility: swimmers aged 14–18 on 31 December of the competition year (unified in 2023; previously girls 14–17, boys 15–18).[2]

Since when do they exist?

The first edition was held in Rio de Janeiro in 2006, and the championships have since become the recognized summit of junior swimming worldwide.[2]

How do swimmers qualify?

Entry runs through the national federations: swimmers must meet World Aquatics' published qualifying standards within the eligibility ages and are selected and entered by their federation as national junior team members — many countries pick their teams at junior nationals or trials.[4]

Why do they matter?

A World Junior medal is the highest age-group honor in swimming, and the championships are the sport's proving ground: recent editions have produced world junior records and launched swimmers directly onto Olympic and senior world podiums. Selection alone marks an athlete as among the best juniors in their country.[2][3]

Who competes?

National junior teams from across World Aquatics' member federations — several hundred of the world's best 14-to-18-year-old swimmers per edition.[1][3]
