What is the Ironman 70.3 World Championship?

The Ironman 70.3 World Championship is the world title race of half-distance triathlon — 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike, 21.1 km run — the championship of the world's most-raced long-course format.[1][2]

Who organizes it and how do athletes qualify?

The IRONMAN Group owns the championship; entry — professional and age-group — is by qualifying slots earned at Ironman 70.3 races worldwide, the same documented meritocracy as Kona's.[1]

When and where is it held?

Annually, on a deliberate global rotation unlike Kona's fixed home: recent hosts run from Taupō, New Zealand (2024) to Marbella, Spain (2025), with a two-day women's/men's format since 2022.[2][3]

Since when does it exist?

First held in Clearwater, Florida in 2006, the championship began rotating globally in 2014 — Mont-Tremblant, Zell am See (first European edition, 2015), Sunshine Coast, Chattanooga, Nelson Mandela Bay (first African edition, 2018), Nice and beyond.[2]

Why does it matter?

The 70.3 format is where most of the world's long-course professionals and serious age-groupers race; its world championship draws the deepest middle-distance fields in the sport, and qualification is a recognized competitive credential at both professional and amateur level.[1][3]
